I am delighted to have been invited to become Patron of the St. George’s Day Festival in Lancashire, not least as County President of the ABF, The Soldiers’ Charity which, along with Derian House Children’s Hospice and the Haythornthwaite Sports Foundation, will benefit from monies raised by the Festival.

We take great pride in our traditions in Lancashire, and in the work of our charities. The St. George’s Day Festival is an exciting combination of both. I hope everyone will support it and get much pleasure from doing so.

We should want to celebrate our national day. The Scots, the Welsh and the Irish have always been proud to do so no matter where they live so why shouldn’t we. After all the people in England have given a lot to the world over the years.

There have been famous writers, scientists, explorers, inventors, industrialists who have improved the life of mankind...and in sport, my own sphere, it was the English who gave football, cricket and rugby to the world.

So I am pleased to support this St. George’s day initiative, particularly at this time when we need something to lift our spirits.

This year it is a Fylde Coast event supporting local charities, perhaps it may develop into something bigger in the years ahead.

I am delighted to be associated with Lytham’s St. George’s celebrations. I have always lived in the North West of England and am indeed proud to be a Lancastrian and Englishman.

I was fortunate to represent and Captain England at Rugby winning 34 caps. I was Captain of the 1980 Grand Slam Team and so I know how passionate the English can be.

May I wish the celebrations much success and in doing so support the many worthy charities.
